Review: Disney on Ice 2017 – Passport to Adventure

At disney on ice 2017 A family day out at Disney on Ice 2017 in Birmingham Our trip to Disney on Ice last weekend was our 3rd annual visit and it was our favourite yet. On the face of it, I always thought that the concept of ‘Disney on Ice’ was, well, a bit strange. I couldn’t really see why watching Disney characters skate around an ice rink would be particularly entertaining… And if I told you that the ‘actors’ don’t actually speak – they mime (perfectly) along to a pre-recorded soundtrack – you might be tempted to give it a miss. But I’m here to tell you that you’d be missing out on a real treat.

It can’t be everyone’s cup of tea (what is?) but we really do enjoy our annual trip to Disney on Ice. This year, guided by Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy and Goofy who are on a world tour, the show takes you from Africa to London, then to the ocean and frosty Norway. If you hadn’t guessed yet, this was brought to life by mini performances of 4 famous Disney films – The Lion King, Peter Pan, The Little Mermaid and Frozen. Each story is condensed into perhaps 20 - 30 minutes, with the main story lines ‘acted’ out, mostly through some truly incredible skating set to the most famous songs from each film – and some dialogue where necessary. The sets were very impressive indeed. Peter Pan included the children’s bedroom in London, the Lost Boys hideout and Captain Hook’s ship – not to mention a giant crocodile and actual flying people! The Little Mermaid included a giant Ursula the Witch and Frozen had a fantastic recreation of Arendelle, Elsa’s ice castle, and plenty of snow. The combination of Disney songs and stories that you know and love, brought to life by some amazing ice skating set to very creative backdrops and set pieces really does work well. Our children absolutely love it – and it’s apparent from the other children’s faces that they do too. I have to admit that enjoy it too! Yes, you have to allow yourself to be drawn into this piece of Disney magic, but where’s the harm in that? If you like Disney, then you’ll love Disney on Ice.
