Review: EDURINO - Phonics Skills with Mika Starter Set, worth £44.99

Review by VIP Club Member Katie Sore

We were excited to be chosen to do a review of the Edurino Phonics Skills with Mika Starter Set, however I wasn’t necessarily sold on the idea of using an app to help my child learn at such a young age; while the Edurino app has begun to change my perspective I think there’s still room for improvement.

With its playful character, engaging story and variety of learning games, it’s a fun way to get children learning. As a parent the thing I liked most is that you can set a screen limit, after which time the character goes to sleep. I think it’s also a really nice way to promote the idea that alongside working hard it’s good to take regular breaks. However, the app could do this better, as while you get a message saying ‘you only have time for one more game’ after you’ve played said game you get taken to the learning path again and it’s only when you pick a further game the character fully goes to sleep, which is a bit confusing and initially caused a few problems with my child. Now we know this, we talk over or mute the sound at the the end so we can get our child to turn it off before any upset starts.

The starter set comes with a character figurine, which you use to unlock the journey, and a magic pen which is great for helping children develop their pen-holding skills. Although my child is possibly a little young for this app, it engages them and is already encouraging a love of learning. Already they’re pointing out letters they’ve learnt when we’re out and about.
