Review: Norwich Castle’s New Entrance

Review by Pia Howe (Toddle About Suffolk)

Norwich Castle has unveiled its stunning new entrance as the first phase of the Royal Palace Reborn project reaches completion. We were invited to be among the first to experience it.

This milestone is part of an £18 million project supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, made possible by National Lottery players. The new entrance area is now a light-filled atrium under a glass roof, offering spectacular views of the Keep and its forebuilding, previously hidden from visitors.

From the moment we walked in, the friendly staff at the door and welcome desk made us feel right at home. They were knowledgeable and engaging, explaining what to expect in the museum and art gallery, and highlighting the live talks to our children and why they should come and listen.

Don't miss the newly revamped shop, which you'll encounter as you enter and exit the castle. It features a wide range of carefully curated gifts, many inspired by Norwich Castle’s collections.

On the first floor of the atrium, the Castle Restaurant boasts a glass balcony that offers diners a breathtaking view of the Keep. While we didn't dine there during our visit, we peeked inside and found it very inviting. We've heard great things about their famous castle quiches, which are still on the menu.

The new education room is spacious and well-equipped, providing enhanced facilities for school groups and learning activities.

The museum and art gallery house impressive collections in Archaeology, Natural History (a hit with our youngest son), Regimental History (which fascinated my ex-military husband), and fine, decorative, and contemporary art (which captivated our eldest son, an aspiring artist).

Interactive displays, children's books and toys, and activities will keep little ones entertained throughout your visit. The Natural History galleries are particularly amazing. Here, young explorers can discover an array of fascinating creatures that swim, fly, and crawl.

The scavenger hunt is a highlight, challenging children to find specific items or solve puzzles as they navigate through the exhibits, making learning fun and dynamic.

The museum's commitment to creating a family-friendly environment is evident in every corner, ensuring that children of all ages have a memorable and educational experience.

Our youngest son left the castle declaring his newfound love for museums, which is a huge thumbs up from us!

We highly recommend visiting Norwich Castle and eagerly anticipate its full restoration in early 2025. We will definitely be returning!
